To the person trying to figure out life, a career is one of the major components of getting your life together. You’re conditioned from a young age to be actively seeking out what it is you want to do for the remainder of your life. When you’re so young and don’t even know yourself, your idea of what that might change almost daily. If you’re one of the lucky ones to already know what you want to do however, you can start seeking out ways to make your dream become a reality right now.
If you’ve decided that you would like to become a cook, here are 3 things you need to do to make that happen:
Get Your Education
In anything that you want to do in life, education is a major priority. Whether that looks like a trade school, college, graduate school, weekly lessons, or anything of the sort, as long as you’re doing something to ensure that you can learn your trade, you’re headed in the right direction. You might be thinking that schooling is expensive, but do what you need to do to acquire funding, because money should never be an issue for you being able to do what’s necessary to move towards a career and your dream of being a cook.
Get Experience
You might dream of becoming a famous chef and of having your own restaurant or your own cooking show, but you can’t do any of that if you don’t put in the work and get yourself some experience first! As is the case in a lot professions, you will probably have to put in your time and work yourself up to the position you desire.
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and your career won’t be either. If this means you start as a dishes washer and move your way up, then do it. Who knows, one day you might even open your own restaurant. By then, all the experience that you gain over the years will pay off. Moreover, you would have learned every part of running a restaurant, from logistics to finances, to the use of special equipment and tools, such as espresso machines, grillers and fryers, commercial woodfired pizza ovens, etc. Therefore, starting off by working in a restaurant as a trainee might just be the first step to the rest of your career. If you’re passionate about it, you’ll eventually make it to where you want to be.
Study Business
In the end, anybody who is looking to climb to the top of the ladder in their line of work should study business. You are your own business. You take your skill on the road with you. If you want to build your own restaurant, you have to have business savvy. If you want to be a cook in a prestigious restaurant, that’s going to require that you know how to negotiate with people and you only accept what you know you’re worth. It’s a dog-eat-dog world in the restaurant industry.
